Beginner | Advanced

Chess is a game that once you learn how to play, you will enjoy it forever. While learning the game, students develop skills in critical thinking, focus, sportsmanship and self-esteem. 

Instructor Ed Larson is an active tournament player currently rated in the 1700 to 1800 (USCF) range.

Beginner

In this three-hour workshop students new to chess will learn basic rules and piece movements, learn basic opening principals and strategies, solve simple tactical problems, and play multiple mini games aimed at improving visualization, and most importantly have fun!.

Advanced

In this three-hour workshop, students will learn opening principals and strategies, solve simple and complex tactical problems (such as mate in one and mate in two, skewers, deflection and double attack) and most importantly have fun! It is encouraged that participants attend the beginner Chess Workshop before advancing to this Workshop.
