We have free services to help you quit
Quitting nicotine can be hard. We can make it easier. We provide counseling, nicotine replacement products, and group classes. Services are available in Hillsborough and Chapel Hill. Interpreters are available at no cost.
One-on-one nicotine cessation counseling
We have free and private nicotine cessation (quitting) counseling. We also provide nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products like gum, patches, and lozenges.
Freshstart classes
Increase your chances of quitting nicotine by joining a Freshstart class. You’ll get support from others who want to quit. And you will learn how to:
- Know if you’re ready to quit
- Set a quit day
- Prepare for your quit day
You will also learn how:
- Medications can increase your success
- Lifestyle changes will make quitting easier
- To manage stress and avoid weight gain
- To stay nicotine-free for good
Are you eligible for our services?
- You must live or work in Orange County.
- You must be 18 years or older to receive nicotine replacement gum, patches, or lozenges.

Reasons to quit using nicotine
Nicotine causes many health conditions:
- People and pets who are around secondhand smoke have a higher risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke.
- Women who smoke are more likely to have trouble getting pregnant.
- Babies whose mothers smoke during, or after pregnancy, are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
- Men who smoke have a higher risk of erectile dysfunction.
- Teens who use nicotine may experience more depression and anxiety.
- Nicotine can make ADHD symptoms worse.
When you quit using nicotine, you:
- Reduce your chances of developing cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
- Save money.
- Can walk longer distances without feeling winded.
- Have a healthier baby.
And within hours or weeks, your body will have an easier time
- Pumping blood through your body.
- Being active or playing with kids or pets.
