WIC - A Healthy Start!

WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.

What We Provide

WIC provides the following at no cost to those who qualify:

  • Cheese
  • Dried beans and peas
  • Eggs
  • Healthy food
  • Infant cereal
  • Infant formula
  • Juice
  • Milk
  • Peanut butter

The WIC staff determines which foods a participant receives based on individual needs. WIC also provides guidance on:

  • Child growth and development
  • Food buying
  • Infant feeding
  • Nutrition for healthy pregnancy
  • Nutrition information
  • Special diets

Participants

WIC is for pregnant women, breast feeding women who have had a baby in the last 12 months, women who have had a baby in the last 6 months, and infants children up to 5 years.

Applying

Applicants must meet WIC income guidelines. Many participants in the WIC Program have jobs. Many receive Food Stamps, Medicaid, School Lunch, or Head Start.

To apply call the Orange County Health Department at 919-245 2422 or 919-245-2447. You can also call 1-800-367-2229. Ask what you need to bring to your visit when you make your appointment. The following are usually helpful:

  • Immunization records
  • Income of each household member before taxes
  • Medicaid and/or Food Stamp card (if you have them)
  • Social security card or number of person applying

Keep your appointment. If you have a problem and cannot go at the time scheduled, call and make a new appointment.
