Smoke-Free Orange County

Orange County's smoke-free rule

In 2013, the Orange County Board of Health created a rule to make public places smoke-free. Public places include government buildings, parks, sidewalks, and lobbies.

Why we have this rule

The rule protects people from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. It also encourages people who smoke to quit by connecting them to support and resources.

How the rule was created

In 2010, North Carolina passed the Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Law. The law allows local governments to create and enforce broader versions of that rule.

As part of its 2012–2014 strategic plan, the Orange County  Board of Health :

  • Reviewed smoke-free policies in other counties
  • Asked for public input
  • Voted to approve the new rule
