These opioid and heroin overdose prevention and safety resources are available at the Orange County Health Department clinics in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

Overdose Reversal - Naloxone

  • Free Naloxone kits and prescriptions are available at the both clinics.
  • Naloxone can be effective in reversing an opioid overdose, like prescription pain killers (oxycodone, methadone) and heroin.
  • Naloxone kits contain an instruction card, 2 vials of naloxone hydrochloride (0.4 mg/mL), gloves, alcohol swabs, syringes, and a CPR mask.
  • Training on how to give Naloxone is available when you pick up a kit.
  • If your kit expires or you need a new one, call (919) 245-2400.

Safe Syringe Initiative

  • Free clean syringes are available at both our Chapel Hill and Hillsborough clinic locations.
  • Clean syringes are available during regular business hours to anyone who requests them, no questions asked.
  • Syringes are provided in a discreet package.
  • The syringe package includes an immunity card accepted by local law enforcement, 20 syringes, condoms, and information on drug abuse and overdose prevention, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C virus transmission prevention, and referral information for services offered by the Health Department.
  • Disposal bins for used syringes are available at both locations. 
  • Upon request, individuals maybe connected to available treatment and community resources.

Prescription drugs must be taken correctly, stored securely, disposed of properly, and NEVER shared. Now you can safely and properly dispose of unwanted, unused, and/or expired medications!
