Volunteer

The Orange County VITA Service is part of the Department on Aging’s Volunteer Connect 55+ Program.  Volunteers of any age are welcome.

Over 70 volunteers participate in the VITA program each year from November to April.  It’s a great way to meet new people while providing a valuable service.

Volunteers assist in a variety of roles:

  • Tax Preparers receive extensive online training and must pass IRS certification exams.  Volunteers must have access to the internet and an email address.  We ask that tax preparers plan to work at least two four-hour shifts per week during tax season.
  • Receptionists greet clients, organize & scan documents, and assist clients before and after they meet with preparers.  One three-hour training session is required and most volunteers work one 3-4 hour shift per week during tax season.
  • Appointment Schedulers handle our appointment phone line, schedule appointments and provide general information to clients over the phone.  One two-hour training session is required, as well as one 3-4 hour shift per week from January thru March.
  • IT Support Team Members work together to maintain, update and troubleshoot all VITA computer equipment and software
