Orange County Recreation

November 2023

November means that winter is right around the corner, and for many of our young athletes that means the start of Basketball season. Registration is ongoing through November 10 for Youth Winter Basketball for boys and girls ages 5- to 10-years-old. Knock off the rust before the start of the season with a special pre-season Basketball Clinic from local coach and OC Recreation alumna Kaylen Campbell. We also have Start Smart Basketball for youth 3-5-years-old to learn sport fundamentals in a fun, non-competitive environment.  More information on all Basketball programs are below.

Many of our November-December classes start in just a few days, and some such as Preschool, Youth Cooking, Chess, and Canvas Painting: Art Workshop still have openings. Register soon as classes start in early November.

Find all of our programs at www.orangecountync.gov/Recreation. Follow our social media channels @orangecountyncrec on Facebook and Instagram for updates and pictures from all of our fun!

Chess Workshops

Chess is a game that once you learn how to play, you will enjoy it forever. While learning the game, students develop skills in critical thinking, focus, sportsmanship, and self-esteem.

Instructor Ed Larson is back with one-day weekend workshops for beginner and advanced players. More info, including descriptions on the different sessions and link to online registration at https://www.orangecountync.gov/661/Chess-Workshops.

Youth Winter Basketball League

Youth Winter Basketball registration is going on now. Orange County Youth Winter Basketball League is a developmental and recreational program for youth ages 5- to 10-years-old. All divisions are co-rec. Volunteer coaches will work with the children to improve individual skills in dribbling, passing, and shooting, while instilling values in teamwork and sportsmanship. Schedule will consist of weekday practice one evening per week for up to one hour and Saturday games. More information and link to online registration at https://www.orangecountync.gov/525/Basketball---Youth-League-Winter.

Seeking Volunteer Coaches

Youth Winter Basketball, like all Orange County Recreation Youth Athletic leagues. relies on volunteer coaches to support youth development in sport fundamentals and life skills. Coaches must exhibit the ability to teach good sportsmanship and sport fundamentals, as well as organize practices, prepare for games, and communicate effectively with players, parents, and Recreation Division staff. Coaches are expected to commit to one practice (1 hr) and one game (1 hr) per week. All coaches must complete an application and pass a background check.

If this sounds like you, contact Kevin Bradsher at kbradsher@orangecountync.gov or 919.245.2672 to learn how to get involved and give back to your community.
