[ARCHIVED] Department on Aging to host Brain Health Academy

The Orange County Department on Aging is proud to present the Brain Health Academy, a six-week educational program on achieving a healthy lifestyle and overall brain health.

The Academy will take place in-person at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, and virtually via Zoom, from 6 – 8 p.m. every Wednesday beginning March 1 and culminating in a graduation ceremony on April 5.   Experts will share practical information and up-to-date research at each session.

The program is free. However, space is limited and participants must register by Wednesday, Feb. 22 and each Wednesday thereafter prior to each upcoming class.

Curriculum Details and Schedule:

Wednesday, March 1: Kick–off Event – Keynote Address and Program Introduction

Wednesday, March 8: Module I - Eating Well to Fuel Spectacular Brain Cells: Eating for brain health – what is good for the body is good for the brain. As we age, whether in our 40s or 80s, our brains and body require certain nutrients to function optimally.

Wednesday, March 15: Module II – Pumping Your Brain for a Powerful Performance: Importance of hysical activity (neuroplasticity and exercise) for optimal brain health – the why and the how.

Wednesday, March 22: Module III - Managing Life’s Transitions through Mindfulness

The importance of adopting a stress management system to support inevitable life transitions.

Wednesday, March 29: Module IV –Novel Learning to Maximize Your Neural Network: People live longer and happier lives when they are engaged in and connected to something that gives them meaning and purpose, such as regular volunteering.

Wednesday, April 5: Module V – Part A & B

Module V – Part A: Healthy Hearing for Optimal Brain Connection: Types of hearing complications: What assistive devices and techniques are available and how hearing connects to the brain.

Module V – Part B: The Ins and Outs of Mastering Medication Management: How medication management affects the brain.

The Seymour Center is located at 2551 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill.

Participants will be able to document learning with a Passport to Brain Health Academy. Individuals will receive a stamp at each week’s presentation and submit the completed passport for a chance to win a dinner and movie tickets for two. The more stamps you receive the more chances you have to win! 

Department on Aging staff will facilitate each session and will make time for questions and answers.

Beverage and refreshments will be available.
