Extreme Heat Warning Forecasted July 26–27, Orange County Cooling Centers Activated

*The cooling center hours have been extended through 8 pm on Monday, July 28 due to an extreme heat warning.

The extreme heat watch for Orange County and surrounding areas has been upgraded to an extreme heat warning from 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 27 (heat index values up to 111 degrees expected).

Orange County will activate cooling centers at the following locations and times:

  • Main Library in Hillsborough(137 W. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough, 27278)
    • 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • Southern Branch Library (203 S. Greensboro St., Carrboro, 27510)
    • 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday 
    • Noon - 6 p.m. Sunday
  • RENA Community Center (101 Edgar St., Chapel Hill, 27516)
    • 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 

Orange County has compiled a list of resources at orangecountync.gov/heat for people to use during dangerous hot weather events.  

Heat Safety Reminders

  • Limit time spent outdoors during peak hours (10 a.m.- 4 p.m.) and take breaks
  • Stay hydrated with water or electrolyte drinks
  • Wear light, breathable clothing
  • Never leave people or pets in hot cars
  • Be alert for symptoms of heat-related illness:
    • Mild: headache, heavy sweating, muscle cramps
    • Severe: confusion, dizziness, fainting — seek medical attention immediately
