[ARCHIVED] Animal Services provides update on dogs seized during criminal investigation

Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is reporting the status of 57 dogs seized in Chapel Hill on Oct. 11, 2019.

Presently, no decision has been made regarding when or if these dogs will be put up for adoption at the OCAS facility. The dogs are currently part of an ongoing investigation and have not yet been surrendered to OCAS in order to be made available for rehoming. If they are made available for adoption at OCAS, they will appear at the “Available Dogs & Pups” link on this page: http://www.orangecountync.gov/287/Available-Pets.

OCAS does not currently have the resources to keep a wait list and notify individuals when or if the dogs are made available. If they are made available for rehoming, this information will be released to the public via press release to news media outlets and on the county website.

These dogs will be housed at OCAS until further notice. They are currently safe, clean, and comfortable in the hands of the animal care staff. They have been evaluated by a veterinarian and are receiving medical care as needed.

As always, OCAS is ready to provide regular services to the public. However, due to the large amount of dogs currently housed at the shelter, they are asking that the public defer surrendering dogs if possible. OCAS will also work with trusted placement partners to rehome pets. And, for anyone considering adopting a new pet, please consider adopting from OCAS. Currently, OCAS is running a “Name Your Price” special for all adoptable dogs and puppies during October to celebrate Dog Adoption Month.

“Animal protection is a critical component of our operations and mission,” said Bob Marotto, Director of Orange County Animal Services. “Thankfully, all of the seized animals in this case are well-suited to rehoming if and when that becomes possible.”

If you would like to contribute to the care for these dogs and others housed at the shelter, monetary and material donations are encouraged. Please visit our donations page at http://www.orangecountync.gov/364/Donations. Donations may be made in the following ways:

  • Drop off or delivery to Orange County Animal Services at 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
  • Online donations through the Community Giving Fund.
