Orange County Department of Housing and Community Development will offer training sessions for renovators, remodelers and painters who wish to renew or gain their EPA Certified Renovator status. Both trainings--a half-day renewal and a full-day initial training session--will be offered at the Solid Waste Management Meeting Room, 1207 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill.
In 2008, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new rules for contractors who renovate or repair housing, childcare faculties or schools built before 1978. Under the new regulations, contractors and workers must have documented training and practice lead-safe work practices to reduce potential lead exposures during renovation and repair activities. The requirements apply to anyone, such as painters, plumbers, electricians, and contractors, who might expose children to lead dust during their work.
DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING
The EPA course is for renovators, remodelers, painters, and other workers who look to renew or gain their EPA Certified Renovator status. Such a status will allow them to lead-safe renovation, repair, and painting work in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities where work will disturb lead-based paint.
4-hour EPA Approved Refresher Course: To renew certification, you must complete an EPA-accredited Certified Renovator Refresher Course that includes hands-on training before your certification expires. If you do not refresh the Certified Renovator training before your certification expires, you must retake the EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) - Initial course to become certified again. Thus, it is essential not to let your certification lapse. This course will be offered Tuesday Sept. 24, from 1 - 5 p.m.
8-Hour Approved Initial Course: The initial EPA approved course will certify participants for the new Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (Lead Renovators) training requirements - this certification is mandatory. This course will be offered Wednesay, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
