[ARCHIVED] Orange County seeking residents for Board of Equalization and Review

The Orange County Board of Commissioners is currently recruiting for the Orange County Board of Equalization and Review. This board hears appeals from citizens concerning various property tax issues, including valuation and exemption appeals.

Ten members are appointed to the board by the Board of County Commissioners—three members, including one chair, and seven alternates. Appointments are for a term of two years.

Members receive a $75 stipend for each meeting they attend while the chair is paid $100 per meeting. Alternates only attend if they are asked to fill in for a regular member who will be absent.

This board requires all members, including alternates, to complete a disclosure statement.

The board may meet up to three days per week, for up to three consecutive months (April – June). The final number of meetings needed will be determined by how many appeals and other cases are received. In 2018, the board met once in April, five times in May and twice in June. Other meetings could be called throughout the year.

Meetings are scheduled from 1-5 p.m. (although individual sessions may not take the entire time, depending on caseload) and are held at the Gateway Center in Hillsborough.

Knowledge of real estate is preferred, but is not a requirement. Residents who are interested in serving should apply at www.orangecountync.gov/boards (click on Vacancies and then click on the link for Board of Equalization and Review) or contact Thom Freeman 919-245-2125 for more information.
