[ARCHIVED] Medicaid expansion thriving in Orange County

Nearly 3,000 Orange County residents have been approved for full Medicaid coverage since the state expanded coverage on Dec. 1, 2023, according to the Orange County Department of Social Services.

“We are happy that so many Orange County residents have been able to enroll so far and encourage anyone currently without health coverage to apply,” said Orange County Department of Social Services Director Nancy Coston. “Expanding Medicaid coverage will improve the health of our residents and the health of our economy. Residents will no longer have to choose between going to a doctor to receive medical care or buying food and other basics for their family."

Most people can get healthcare coverage through N.C. Medicaid if they meet the criteria below.

  • You live in North Carolina
  • Age 19 through 64
  • You are a citizen (some non-U.S. citizens can get health coverage through N.C. Medicaid)
  • If your monthly household income fits within the chart below:

Completed applications can also be submitted by fax (919-644-3005), email (adult.medicaid@orangecountync.gov) or mail (P.O. Box 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278). Be sure your address and phone number are correct and be sure to respond to mail or phone calls from your local Department of Social Services.

If you are approved, you will get a letter in the mail. If you did not choose a health plan on your application, you will be assigned one.

It can take up to 45 calendar days (or up to 90 calendar days for disability applications) for your application to be approved or rejected. It can take longer if your application is missing information.

If you need help with your application, you can make a free appointment with NC Navigator Consortium online or call 1-855-733-3711.
