The Envirothon is an exciting natural resource education program that challenges students through an interactive competition. Middle and high school teams (consisting of 3-5 students) are tested in Wildlife, Forestry, Aquatic Ecology, Soils and Land Use, and Current Environmental Issues. Teams work collaboratively to deepen their knowledge of ecology and natural resource management and to practice their environmental problem-solving skills in preparation for Envirothon competitions.
Competitions start at the regional level within the NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts' jurisdictions. Orange County students will participate in the Area 3 Envirothon, which includes students from Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Orange, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham Counties. The top seven teams from high school and middle school tiers will advance to the State Envirothon. The highest-ranking high school team will then qualify for the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon, where they will compete against teams from the United States, Canada, and Asia.
Orange SWCD sponsors local teams to compete in this event. Teams are open to FFA, Environmental clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs and homeschool groups.
