Qualifications for Office

Qualifications

  • President - Must be 35 years of age, 14-year resident within US. Must be born a U.S. Citizen
  • US Senate - Must be 30 years of age, 9-year U.S. Citizen and a resident of the state from which they are elected.
  • US House - Must be 25 years of age, 7-year U.S. Citizen and a resident of the state from which they are elected. (May run outside their district Article 6, Section 6)
  • North Carolina Senate - Must be 25 years of age and 2-year resident of State and 1-year resident of District preceding election
  • North Carolina House - Must be 21 years of age and 1-year resident of State preceding election
  • Governor - Must be 30 years of age, 5-year U.S. Citizen, 2-year State resident preceding election
  • Lieutenant Governor - Must be 30 years of age, 5-year U.S. Citizen, 2-year State resident preceding election
  • All Judges and District Attorney - Must be attorney and at least 21 years of age
  • County Commissioner - Must be 21 years of age by the time they take office, live in the District they want to represent or run as an "At Large" candidate
  • Sheriff - Must be 21 years of age by the time they take office and must be a resident of the county for a year prior to the November General Election. Must never have been a convicted felon
  • Municipal Offices - Must be 21 years of age by the time they take office, and must live in the municipality for which they are running
  • School Board - Must be 21 years of age by the time they take office, and must live in the school district for which they are running
  • Soil and Water District Supervisor - Must be 21 years of age by the time they take office
