Privacy Policy

Purpose

Orange County Public Library is committed to protecting your right to privacy. This confidentiality extends to information received, materials borrowed, and other personally identifiable uses of library materials, facilities, or services.

Policy Statement

We will not share your personal information with any groups outside of Orange County Government. Any personal information you give us will only be used to provide or improve library services.

The Orange County Public Library follows North Carolina Statute 125-19 which requires all public libraries to guarantee the privacy of customer records.

Your Account
Information about your library account is available only to you. If you would like to allow another person to use or check your account, be sure to give him or her your card.

Parents & Children
Children’s records are equally protected. We ask parents to use their child’s library card when checking out, renewing, or paying fines on items for their child.

Computer & Internet Access

  • Public Computer Use: The library does not collect information regarding public computer use aside from sign-in time and session length. Your browsing history and any files created or saved are erased after each session.
  • Public Wireless Access: When you use the library’s wireless network, your computer’s IP address is automatically recorded for statistical purposes. An IP address is a number that is assigned to a computer whenever it connects to a network. We do not record any personally identifying information or information about your internet use.

Use of the Library website is covered by Orange County’s Web Privacy Policy.

Third-Party Resources
The Library provides access to third-party websites and resources, which are not covered under this policy. Customers are encouraged to review the Privacy Policy for all third-party websites and resources before using them.

Responsibility

The Library Director is the final authority with regards to enforcing this policy.
