Hillsborough Garden Club Awards Grant to the Orange County Public Library for Gardening Projects
The Hillsborough Garden Club (HGC) has awarded a grant to the Orange County Public Library to expand and strengthen its gardening, conservation, and educational initiatives. The funding will support several key projects designed to engage the community with hands-on learning and promote environmental stewardship.
The grant will enable the library to:
- Continue a seed distribution program for patrons
- Expand the Learning Garden planting area at the Main Library
- Purchase tools, soil amendments, and other supplies to support services in the Learning Garden
- Create green literacy bags/kits for use by parents, caregivers, and schools
Located at 137 W. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough, the Orange County Main Library’s Learning Garden may appear dormant during the winter months, but during the growing season it thrives with vibrant native and naturalized plants such as marigolds, purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, blue false indigo, and scarlet bee balm.
“Staff began developing the garden in 2023 with a focus on flowering plants that are native and naturalized to NC,” said Orange County Public Library Local History Librarian, Kafi – Ayanna Allah. “The Learning Garden was initiated by staff on top of their other duties to make use of a high-traffic area that had been devoid of plants and was regularly sprayed with pesticides.”
The Orange County Public Library extends its appreciation to the Hillsborough Garden Club for its generous support. The grant will help expand the library’s ability to provide environmentally focused programming and resources that benefit families, students, and the broader community.
