Trees for a Greener Orange

Trees are important for many reasons. They provide shade, purify our air, produce oxygen, and reduce soil erosion and flooding. They even decrease the greenhouse gases that are causing climate change. Trees also improve our mental health and well-being with the beauty and presence that they provide throughout the seasons.

Did you know that neighborhoods with more trees tend to be cooler in the heat of summer?

Orange County is committed to providing a green community to those that live in the County by increasing tree canopy. In our Climate Action Plan, we have a target of giving away 10,000 tree seedlings in 10 years

Tree Giveaways

Orange County held its first tree giveaway in March, 2025. This event provided 100 free red maple (Acer rubrum) seedlings to community members to support a greener, healthier community.

Our next giveaway is Friday, March 20th! This is North Carolina's Arbor Day. Read more and sign up to get a tree!

Stay informed about future tree events and other sustainability programs by signing up for Climate Connection, our quarterly newsletter.

Planting Trees

Orange County received a grant to help cool down hot spots in the County by planting trees in areas with little shade. Learn more about this effort.
