Recycling Stars Program Check-In
Solid Waste’s Education and Outreach team is continuing to make headway on the Recycling Stars Program. The Stars program, designed using a best practices model, is intended to be an individual education program to improve the content and recyclability of the single stream recycling collected curbside.
Curbside recycling carts are inspected by staff. Carts with no contamination will receive a star sticker. Households that receive two star stickers in a row will be entered in a raffle to win a prize. Carts with mild contamination will receive a “light” letter to inform residents of items that are not accepted in single stream recycling. Carts that receive a ‘light” letter are still collected the day they are inspected.
Carts with more serious contamination or more problematic contaminates, like plastic bags, will receive an “oops” tag and will not be collected during that collection cycle. Residents are responsible for removing all contamination from the cart. The cart will be collected in the next collection cycle provided there is no contamination. Contamination is costly and can cause safety issues at recycling facilities. Please check the recycle right flyer and A-Z Waste & Recycle Guide to become familiar with the County’s recycling guidelines.
