ANNOUNCEMENTS

Help for Families with Children Under Age 17

The American Rescue Act, passed by Congress in early 2021 includes a new provision for Advance Payment of Child Tax Credits.  If you have a tax dependent who is age 17 or under, the IRS will automatically calculate an estimated Child Tax Credit for your 2021 taxes.  Calculations are based on your 2020 tax return (or 2019 return if you did not file for 2020).  You’ll begin receiving a monthly payment in July and continue for the rest of 2021.  It’s important to understand that these payments will reduce the amount of refund you receive when filing your 2021 tax return.  If you expect your 2021 income to be substantially different than last year, you may want to consider opting out of receiving these Advance Payments.  Learn more here.

The Next Master Aging Plan!
What is most important to you?

As the experts in what it means to be an older adult in Orange County, we’re counting on your input to help develop our 5-year Master Aging Plan. This strategic plan will guide our age-friendly community initiatives, events, programming, and policy from 2022-2027. The Master Aging Plan goals should reflect what is most important to you!

Please share your thoughts through this anonymous survey which will be available from June 1 - June 30. To access the survey electronically visit www.orangecountync.gov/2021-MAP-Survey or scan the QR code above with your smart phone camera. Call the Aging Helpline at (919) 968-2087 if you need help accessing or completing the survey. You may also pick up a paper copy of the survey at the Passmore and Seymour Centers.

Where’s My Tax Refund?

Although most returns are processed timely and refunds sent within 21 days , the IRS is facing significant delays in processing many tax returns.  At last count they are working through millions of returns that require some level of manual processing.  This might be because of a discrepancy between the taxpayer’s request for stimulus payments and IRS records, possible identity theft, or other issues.  You can check the status of your refund at  www.irs.gov/refunds or by downloading the IRS2Go app.

Suggestions for Job Seekers 55+ Years of Age - Next Steps

As mentioned in the previous issue, this provides information and links to materials you can use for the next steps of your job search.

GUIDING YOUR CONTACTS:
Why do you ask other people for help in your job search? Because they know people you don’t. When you do this, what do you expect them to do?  The most you should expect is... for them to connect, refer or introduce you, or give you names of people they know.

When asking for help, many job seekers give their resume to the other person. The problem with this is your resume has to be translated. The reader will ask “who do you want to meet?” or, “what kind of job are you looking for?” or, “do you have a target list?”  This takes time. Most people will say they don’t have time.

HERE’S A BETTER WAY TO GUIDE PEOPLE. Prepare and use a NETWORKING BRIEF.

Next issue we’ll discuss Networking. Because 50% of all jobs are NOT posted, understanding how networking works today and doing it effectively is critical for job seekers.

As you continue to make progress, let me know if you have any questions or want more information, and feel free to contact me at 919.616.8778 or skomives@orangecountync.gov. I'm here to help you.

Prescription Medications Too Expensive?

Medicare’s Extra Help program reduces the price of medications for those who qualify.  You must have monthly income below $1610 and savings less than $13,290.  For a married couple, income must be less than $2,178 and savings below $26,520.

For those who don’t qualify for that program, explore these options:

  • Ask your doctor and pharmacist about alternative medications that are covered on your drug plan at a lower co-pay, such as generics.
  • Search for Manufacturer Discount Programs that cover your medication.
  • Check the current pricing of your medications using a Drug Discount Program.  In some cases, retail pricing with coupons are lower than the co-pays on your drug plan.  Be aware, however that costs won’t apply to your drug plan’s deductible. Popular options include:  www.goodrx.com, www.blinkhealth.com, www.northcarolinadrugcard.com

Make an appointment to meet with a certified volunteer counselor from the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) to discuss your options.  We have both in-person appointments and appointments by Zoom available by visiting our website www.orangecountync.gov/ocncshiip or calling 919-245-4274.

Durable Medical Equipment Tune Up. Is your device the correct height? Are your cane tips worn through? Are your walker brakes loose? Make an appointment with Marie Dagger for a "tune up." Call 919-245-4279 or email MDagger@orangecountync.gov Available at the Seymour and Passmore Centers by appointment only.
