JOB SEARCH ACTIVITIES 2021: More 'What You Can Do While You're at Home'Self-Knowledge Check-Up & Describing Your Acceptable or Ideal Job, Your Own Business, or What You Wish To Do as a Volunteer
To achieve your goal – be employed, or own and operate your own business, or volunteer, it is most important for you to confirm what you will actually be doing, know who you will be working with, and how much you will be paid, if at all. Getting this done is something you can do now, while you’re home. Here’s a practical way to do it. - Use a note pad or your computer and write down:
- What you did in your earlier work, your own business, or volunteer activities, including the situation(s), your involvement (what you did by yourself or as a team member), and what happened (the outcome & results).
- Your education – degree(s) you earned; training / certifications received
- If currently employed, add key words from your job description
- And add in after you’ve completed the worksheets in the Self-Knowledge Checkup, write down your strengths, values and motivations
- Now you’re ready to describe acceptable and ideal jobs, or types of businesses you want to start or own, or volunteer activities of interest. Here’s how:
- Write down what you would actually be doing – in a job, owning / operating your own business, or volunteering
- If you’re going to be an employee, the kind of people you would work with, work for, or have report to you
- If you’re going to own / operate your own business and need employees, write down the kind of people you would have report to you
- If you want to volunteer, write down your concerns – the mission or values of the volunteer organization, types of people, or travel requirements
- Note how each of these might be different from your current job, business, or volunteer activities.
- If you’re going to be paid, write down how much – in salary, and benefits
