New Rules for Battery Recycling
Orange County now requires lithium and lithium ion batteries to be separated from alkaline batteries and taped on both ends before bringing them to battery drop-off sites. This prevents the terminals from rubbing together, potentially overheating, and causing a fire hazard. Over the past few years there have been many news stories covering spontaneously combustible lithium batteries in cell phones and other electronics. They have been known to be a fire hazard while simply stored in container, but also while in transit to recycling facilities, and also while being shipped by air. To ensure public safety, Orange County Solid Waste Management encourages residents to take precaution when storing spent batteries as well as when recycling them.
