Orange County announces closings for Memorial Day observance

Orange County Government will be closed on Monday,  May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. Please note the following service exceptions:

Animal Services

Animal Services will check the after-hours drop off. For Animal Control emergencies during this time, including potential rabies exposures or animal bites to humans, all 9-1-1 to be connected to our on-call Animal Control Officer.

Solid Waste

Curbside recycling will be collected as usual. Please have carts out by 7 a.m. All other solid waste facilities – Landfill, Waste & Recycling Centers, Solid Waste Administration – will be closed.

Orange County Public Transportation

OCPT will operate limited service serving the in-county dialysis route only (Carolina Dialysis). All other OCPT routes will not run on Monday.

Emergency services will be available 24/7 by calling 9-1-1.

Finalists selected for River Park Public Art Project

The Hillsborough Arts Council (HAC) and the Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) are excited to announce the three finalists for the River Park Public Art Project. Charlie Brouwer of Willis, VA, Charles Pilkey of Mint Hill, NC, and Jonathan Brilliant of Raleigh, NC have been selected as finalists. The selected artist will design, fabricate, and install an exterior, permanent piece of public art incorporating wood salvaged from the historic Calvin Street Tree that fell during Hurricane Florence.

Thirty-four applications from ten states and three countries were received. Each of the finalists will create a site-specific project proposal and the winning proposal will be selected in July 2019.  The work of art will be installed in River Park in Downtown Hillsborough.

Orange County to host community yard sale on June 8

Orange County Department on Aging and the Friends of the Jerry M. Passmore Center invite the public to a Community Yard Sale on Saturday, June 8 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. It is going to be HUGE! Join us for this multi-vendor yard sale and come prepared to find those hidden treasures you thought were gone forever.

The sale will take place in the front parking lot of the SportsPlex and Passmore Center, located at 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough.

The event is FREE to the public, $15 for vendors.

Orange County Animal Services to host 10th Open House on June 1

Orange County Animal Services will be hosting its annual Open House on Saturday, June 1, 2019, from noon – 4 p.m.

The event will feature tours of the facility, various activities for families and children, delicious refreshments, and more. CLAWS, Inc. will also be on site to feature select birds of prey. Other animal organizations will also be participating in the event.

The day of celebration always aims to highlight Cat Adoption Month, which runs through June and features adoption specials for all cats and kittens. This year will also feature a Senior Adoption Special for available dogs and cats over 8 years in age.

The Open House will be held at the Animal Services Center at 1601 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill. The Center will remain open for regular Saturday hours (including during the Open House) and adoptable animals will be available. Those visiting the Center between noon and 4 p.m. and not picking up or dropping off an animal should plan to park in the Eubanks Road Park & Ride lot, where a shuttle will be available to transport people to and from the facility.
