UV Safety Awareness Month
In July, we raise awareness that UV is the root cause of most skin cancers and encourage the public to take precautions. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends that you practice safe sun all year-round by following three simple steps while outdoors: - Seek shade when appropriate
- Wear sun-protective clothing
- Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
Remember, no matter your skin tone, UV can damage your skin and cause skin cancer. Learn more about protecting yourself and how to check yourself for skin cancer.

Keep NC S.A.F.E.
Firearms are the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina. A 2019 study estimated that up to 32% of gun-related deaths and unintentional injuries among youths could’ve been prevented with safe gun storage. Responsible gun ownership starts with proper gun storage, which helps keep our children and other community members safe. NC S.A.F.E (Secure All Firearms Effectively) is working to raise awareness of gun accidents and the importance of proper storage. Learn more about how to safely store your gun and consider looking into out-of-home gun storage options during times such as when traveling or when children are visiting. July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Month
Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was created in 2008 to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face in regard to mental illness in the US. Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities. To continue her visionary work, each year Mental Health America (MHA) develops resources dedicated to addressing and supporting the mental health needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). The theme of Mental Health America’s 2023 BIPOC Mental Health Campaign is Culture, Community, and Connection. Our lives are deeply intertwined with the environments around us. Who and what we are surrounded by impacts our mental health and overall wellness. In particular BIPOC populations are faced with disproportionate amounts of historical trauma and displacement that have challenged how these communities remain sustainable and continue to thrive. Culture, community, and connection are pillars that support and uplift BIPOC individuals when the dangers of oppression and systemic racism threaten the environments where BIPOC individuals live, work, play, and thrive.
