Thank a Nurse This Week!
National Nurses Week is celebrated by nurses, employers, and staff by acknowledging the importance of our nurses, as well as promoting the nursing profession and the significant role it plays in the world of healthcare. National Nurses Week, traditionally celebrated from May 6 to May 12 each year, is now a month-long celebration to expand opportunities to elevate and celebrate nursing. The month-long celebration is a time “to recognize the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses,” according to the American Nurses Association. Today and everyday, thank a nurse for keeping our community healthy!

Hurricane Preparedness Week
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 - November 30. While devastating hurricanes can occur anytime during those months, peak hurricane season is mid-August to late October. It is important to remember the forecast cone is NOT an impact cone. Impacts from tropical systems can and will be felt far from the storm’s center. The center of the storm does not need to make landfall in North Carolina for the state to feel severe impacts.
Hurricane Basics - Hurricane categories are based on sustained wind speed.
- Water is often the greatest threat to life and property.
- Atlantic Hurricane Season is June 1-Nov. 30
- Develop a family evacuation plan and pack an emergency kit (see graphic above)
- Plan, prepare, and stay informed.

Orange County COVID-19 Emergency Declaration to Expired on May 1
The longest-running state of emergency declaration in Orange County history expired at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. Orange County originally declared a state of emergency due to COVID on March 13, 2020, and extended it more than a dozen times as conditions warranted. With the overall situation improving, officials will allow the current declaration to expire as scheduled. As a result, masks will no longer be required in some indoor settings, including public transportation. Even so, Orange County Health Director Quintana Stewart urges individuals to wear masks while using public transportation. “Wearing a mask is most beneficial in crowded or poorly ventilated locations,” she said. “Wearing a well-fitted mask over the nose and mouth in indoor travel or public transportation settings protects the individual wearing the mask and those around them, including those who are immunocompromised, unvaccinated or not yet vaccine-eligible. This helps to keep travel and public transportation safer for everyone.”

COVID-19 Preventative Medication
Evusheld is an investigational medicine that can help protect you from getting COVID-19. You may be eligible for Evusheld if you: - Are moderately or severely immunocompromised and may not mount an adequate immune response to COVID-19 vaccination OR have a history of severe allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines, and
- Do not currently have COVID-19 and have not recently had close contact with someone with COVID-19, and
- Are an adult or adolescent ages 12 years and older weighing at least 88 pounds (40 kg).
Evusheld contains two different antibodies that can help prevent COVID-19. It must be given by your healthcare provider before exposure to COVID-19.
Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if this option is right for you. Even if you receive Evusheld, taking multiple prevention steps, such as wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator and avoiding crowded places, can provide additional layers of protection from COVID-19.
