2020 Census - Did You Know?Data from the Census brings $7.4 billion in federal tax dollars every year to our communities – that’s $1,623 per person, per year in North Carolina according to a George Washington University report. Ten minutes of your time can shape your and North Carolina's future for the next 10 years. The 2020 Census impacts funding, planning & services, which all have a direct impact on jobs and the state's economy. Incomplete data today sets an inaccurate baseline for tomorrow – compounding the impact for NC for the next 10 years. We only have until September 30, 2020, to get a complete count. Approximately 4 million North Carolinians have yet to be counted. If you are one of those, please respond today by visiting my2020census.gov or by calling (844) 330-2020. Let's #MakeNCCount!

Seymour Center Construction UpdateWe are very excited about all the new construction updates to the Seymour Center. As most of our regular Seymour Center users are aware, the major construction project was just getting underway as we began the “Stay At Home” orders due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in late March.
Currently, the new back parking lot with the additional 52 parking spaces is scheduled to be paved this week and then more work will be done to a join the new parking area and the current entrance. If you are regular curbside lunch program participant watch for changes over the next few weeks. There has already been some work done to make our main entrance area and curbside ADA compliant. We have more work to be done around the main entrance with adding 3 additional accessible parking spaces. The new addition/expansion to the Great Hall is well underway and the framing and outside walls have all been installed and once this is complete the inside work can be done. The new office expansion to expand and accommodate our Aging Transitions staff so they don’t have to share offices will provide more confidential meeting spaces with their clients is all but complete; the painting and carpet are complete and the furniture for these offices is about to be ordered. Over the next month, staff should be able to move into these offices.

The Seymour Center is an early voting site which starts October 15 and we hope that all the work around the front of building will be complete just prior to this date. There is still work to do but we are marching toward our goal of November 1 to have all the construction completed.

Information from the IRS13.9 Million Americans will receive additional small IRS payment. Taxpayers who had a refund that was not paid promptly will be receiving a separate interest payment from the IRS. The average payment will be $18 but the exact amount depends on your refund amount. If your refund was direct deposited to your bank account, this separate interest payment will come the same way, otherwise you’ll receive a check in the mail with the notation “INT Amount”. Please note that this payment is taxable income and the government will send you a 1099-INT form that you’ll need when you file your 2020 income tax in early 2021.

Mature Job Seekers and EntrepreneursSearching for a job? Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking (VSED): A little Known End of Life Option As modern technology prolongs our lives, a life well-lived can often end with a long and painful struggle. Increasingly there are choices available about end-of-life options that afford greater personal control over the time and manner of death. A “good death” is more likely when medical practitioners and those supporting the dying person are more informed about these options. The Project EngAGE End of Life Choices Senior Resource Team proudly hosts Elliott and Susan Schaffer for a discussion of the medical, ethical and legal issues involving VSED, Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking. They will share with us the end of life story of Susan’s mother, Beatrice Belopolsky, a resident of a retirement community in New Jersey. Presenters include: Elliott Schaffer, MD, retired geriatrician and former Medical Director at Martins Run Life Care Community in Media, Pa. Susan Schaffer, JD, retired attorney and former Senior Counsel at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
The event will take place on Thursday, Sept 22, from 4 – 5:15 pm via a virtual platform. The room will accept entry beginning at 3:45 pm to assist with any questions or issues with using the platform prior to the start of the program. For information please contact Shenae McPherson at shmcpherson@orangecountync.gov. If technology assistance is needed, please contact Shenae McPherson at 919-245-4243 by Thursday, Sept 17.

Prime Time Players Present "August 18, 1920, the day that the 19th Amendment Passed"On August 18, 2020, women of the United States celebrate 100 years of being enfranchised as voters. A century earlier, on a hot day in Tennessee, the 72-year struggle to guarantee women the right to vote climaxed in a dramatic showdown in the Tennessee House of Representatives. A young member of the house switched his vote because of advice he had gotten from his mother, and that was the tipping point for the passage of the 19th amendment to the constitution. The amendment declared that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Among the tools the suffragists had at their disposal was theatre, and numerous plays were produced in the decades prior to the 19th amendment that helped make the case for women’s suffrage. Unique among them was a monologue by Marie Jenney Howe that sharply lampooned an anti-suffrage speech. The Anti-Suffrage movement was, in some ways, no laughing matter: it was large and well-organized, with women leading the effort to keep women from being able to vote. View Here: https://youtu.be/kQwFh6JmM0I As a new way of connecting with their audience, The Prime Time Players is offering a free virtual production every other Tuesday for you to enjoy.
