Volunteer Opportunities

Orange County Solid Waste Management is always looking for volunteers to help spread the word about our fantastic waste diversion programs!

Compost Volunteers

Orange County Solid Waste provides a great opportunity for OC residents to drop off their food waste (or commercial compost) at the Carrboro Farmer’s Market every Saturday throughout the year for the duration of market hours. We are always looking for volunteers to help us run this great and free service.

Volunteers set up, monitor, and break down the food waste drop-off station for the market and visitors. As monitors, we ask our volunteers to make sure that only food waste - no plastic or metal go into the compost collection carts. Volunteers are our ambassadors for the program, and are encouraged to engage participants around composting and food waste issues, facilitate full use of this groundbreaking program, and to invite users to volunteer too!

If you are interested in this opportunity please contact us at recycling@orangecountync.gov or visit click here to sign up for a shift!

Recycling Volunteers

Orange County Solid Waste provides informational booths and recycling opportunities for many events held in Orange County. We are always looking for volunteers to help at our info booths and talk about recycling or, for the less extroverted folks we have opportunities for recycling monitors. Recycling monitors walk around the event grounds for the duration of an event checking each "trash station" to ensure recyclables are not thrown in the trash and vice versa.

If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact us at recycling@orangecountync.gov for a list of events!
