-
In the past the Orange County
Sheriff’s Office has been overwhelmed with citizen complaints of
speeding vehicles. Citizens living on our rural roads are generating the
majority of these complaints. Until now our only means of responding to
these complaints has been to conduct traffic stops or stationary patrols
in these areas and to some extent this method was productive.
-
On July 29th 2002
Sheriff Pendergrass assigned Deputy Kevin Jones now Sergeant Jones to the newly formed Rural
Area Traffic Team or R.A.T.T. PATROL. The team provides
special enforcement for speeding in sub-divisions and on the rural roads
of our county. This team will also conduct public education programs for
citizens and on site safety programs in schools. Child safety seat
restraint and seat belt programs, driver safety and DWI prevention
programs will be conducted for our citizens with a community involvement
approach towards traffic safety. Using these methods we hopefully can
reduce or reverse the trends shown by vehicle accidents, crash injuries,
speed and fatality statistics.
-
We encourage citizens to call and
make us aware of problems in their neighborhoods and to make request for
traffic education programs. You may do this by contacting the Traffic Team
Supervisor, Captain J. Nida, at 919-644-3050 or by e-mail at jnida@co.orange.nc.us or by contacting Sheriff Pendergrass directly.
