Registered Motor Vehicle Taxes
Registered motor vehicle taxes are a compilation of county and city taxes. Four of the five towns also charge a vehicle fee (see below).
Vehicle Tax Inquiry
Tax bill information is available online and is mailed to the property owner at the address on file with DMV at the time of registration.
Vehicle Tax Deadlines
In general, vehicle tax bills are due annually 4 months following the date of registration. Bills become delinquent 30 days after the payment due date.
Vehicle Tax Payment
- Payment options include cash, check, money order, credit card or debit card.
- Pay online using a third party: the Official Payment Corporation (OPC). There is a convenience fee per transction based on transaction amount. Fee amount starts at $3.00.
- Pay by telephone: 1-888-272-9829, using a third party, OPC. There is a convenience fee per transction based on transaction amount. Fee amount starts at $3.00.
- Pay in the Tax Administration Office by cash, check or money order.
- Mail checks to: Orange County Revenue, P.O. Box 8181, Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
Value Appeals and Proporation
Information about vehicle appeals and proration of vehicle tax bills is printed on the back of the original tax notice. You may wish to appeal the value or request a proration because the vehicle has been sold, wrecked, stolen, junked or because you have registered the car out of state.
City Vehicle Fees
Vehicle fees are collected at the request of towns located in Orange County. Vehicle fees are collected on vehicles that are within the limits of the following towns:
- Carrboro Vehicle Fee - $30
- Chapel Hill Vehicle Fee - $30
- Hillsborough Vehicle Fee - $10
- Durham Vehicle Fee - $15
