What is the Census?

Every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a headcount of every person living in the United States, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

In addition to determining Congressional representation, the Census helps describe who we are as a county, state, and nation.

Census questionnaires will take less than 10 minutes to complete and will be mailed or delivered to every U.S. household in March 2010. The questions should be answered based on household composition as of April 1, 2010. All responses are confidential and protected by law.

Why is the upcoming census important to Orange County?

  • Allocations for Orange County's budget (federal and state funds).
  • Census count determines distribution of more than $300 billion in federal funds annually (schools, human services, healthcare, etc.).
  • Census count used by the state of North Carolina to determine the allocation of state funds.
  • The County and municipalities use census information to plan, allocate funds, determine location of police/fire departments, and for many other projects.

Orange County and the 2010 Census

A primary goal of the 2010 Census is to increase the national mail-back response rate. In order to help make everyone in the community aware of Census 2010 and maximize response, the Census Bureau suggests local participation in its Complete Count Committee (CCC) program.  In May of this year, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) formed a CCC and invited representatives from local government agencies, the school systems, chambers of commerce, religious organizations, and the media to serve on the Committee.

The Orange County CCC has been meeting since September to develop its Action Plan and meets once per month.  The Committee will sunset in May 2010.
