Address GIS Data and Rural Route Conversion Project:

The Planning and Inspections Department, with help from the U.S. Postal Service, began the major project of replacing rural route/box number addresses with house number/street addresses in the Spring of 1987, after the Board of County Commissioners adopted an ordinance authorizing the conversion. The objective was to give permanency and consistency to a system that allows more efficient mail delivery and 911 access, to an address that will remain constant, even as postal territories change. New residences are assigned street addresses at the time the building permit is issued. New number assignments will become an integral part of the County's Geographical Information System and will be particularly important in the dispatching of emergency vehicles under the County's emergency dispatch system (E-911). The ongoing assignment of addresses for new building permits was moved to the Land Records/GIS Department as of September 4, 2001.
