Churton and Margaret Street Construction
Be Alert for Road Construction in Downtown Hillsborough
Travelers are advised to be alert for possible traffic congestion in downtown Hillsborough, which could start this week — the week of June 21.
Congestion may occur on Churton Street near Margaret Lane due to sidewalk and stormwater construction on West Margaret Lane for the duration of the project. One lane of West Margaret Lane may be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Weather permitting, construction is to be completed by the end of October.
The project will provide a brick sidewalk, curbing and storm drain improvements to the north and south sides of Margaret Lane from Churton Street to the Orange County Public Library. It will require removal of several parking spaces on the library side that already have been marked as “no parking.” The spaces were removed to facilitate safe traffic flow on Margaret Lane after neighbors expressed concern about increased vehicular trips to the new county facilities and parking in the roadway.
The construction is being managed by the Town of Hillsborough.
Please note the following schedule as disseminated by Hillsborough Public Works Officials:
6/21/10 (Monday): Beginning of construction of northern side of W. Margaret lane (westbound lane); estimated period of construction: 30 days. This westbound lane area will be closed during the previously mentioned hours of 9:00am through 4:00pm Monday through Friday. The eastbound lane will be carrying all traffic, assisted by traffic flagmen.
7/26/10 (Monday): Beginning of construction of the southern side of W. Margaret lane (eastbound lane); estimate period of construction: 40 days. This eastbound lane area will closed during the same weekday hours of 9:00am through 4:00pm. The westbound lane will be carrying all traffic, assisted by traffic flagmen.
9/13/10 (Monday): Beginning of construction on Churton Street sidewalk area (southbound lane); estimated period of construction: 20 days. Both lanes of Churton street should remain open for this phase, however the Contractor may close the southbound lane for short periods of time on weekdays between 9:00am and 4:00pm.
The project is scheduled to be complete in an estimated 90-100 days after the beginning of construction (est. mid September completion). This schedule accommodates inclement weather and is not a guaranteed delivery.
Please pass on this information to your patrons.
This construction period will cause significant inconvenience to the Margaret Street entrance to the West Campus for both County employees and visitors (especially Library visitors). Please suggest that your employees and patrons to use the Churton Street entrance/exit as well as the County Customer parking in the lower level of the parking deck to minimize this inconvenience.
When complete, the sidewalk will provide safe pedestrian access to the library, courts and county government facilities.
