Orange County DSS seeking donations for Toy Chest

ORANGE COUNTY (December 7, 2017) -- The Orange County Department of Social Services wants to help all children in Orange County have a special holiday season. Each year, DSS sponsors the “Toy Chest” to provide an opportunity for low-income parents to select two or three gifts per child to supplement their holiday gift giving.

The “Toy Chest” is open to all Orange County residents with children who are at or below 200 percent of federal poverty level. This year's "Toy Chest” will be held Dec. 16-17 at the DSS Office, located at 113 Mayo Street in Hillsborough. The program serves children age 18 and under, but focuses on children under age 12.

Last year in collaboration with the local Toys for Tots campaign, the “Toy Chest” distributed more than 9,500 toys to more than 2,800 Orange County children. Individuals, businesses and nonprofit groups can support the program by donating new toys, books, articles of clothing, non-perishable food items or by making a monetary contribution. All donated funds are used to purchase toys, books, clothing and food at discounted prices through partnerships with area businesses.

There are no overhead costs to the program, and items are distributed to members of the Orange County community. Please visit to view local toy collection sites, learn more about how you can help Orange County Toys for Tots, or to make an online donation (select “NC-Hillsborough” to ensure your gift is designated for Orange County, NC.
