ORANGE COUNTY TEAMS WITH CARRBORO FARMERS’ MARKET FOR FOOD WASTE COMPOSTING PILOT PROGRAM
ORANGE COUNTY, NC (June 14, 2016) - Starting June 18, 2016 the Carrboro Farmers' Market will partner with Orange County Solid Waste Management to offer a free food waste drop-off for local residents and Farmer’s Market attendees, continuing every Saturday market day through September 3rd 2016! Participants can bring all food scraps (veggie scraps and all meat, bones and dairy too) and food related paper such as paper napkins and paper plates. This is not your backyard compost—the collected organic waste will be composted through a commercial composting company, Brooks Contractors.
We can’t do this without Compost Collection VOLUNTEERS, to educate about the compost collection and monitor the collection carts. Volunteer shifts are each Saturday June 18 to September 3, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. - Noon. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting new program, please email Muriel Williman at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is a pilot program! Volunteers will also help monitor the success of the program and help determine if it should be ongoing after the first few months. June 18th will kick off the pilot with a big food waste awareness party from 8:00 a.m. to Noon at the Carrboro Farmers Market! There will be composting demonstrations and worm bin exploration, as well as the opportunity to drop off food wastes for the first time. People who pledge to participate in the pilot program will receive a free food waste collection bucket.
