LEE SMITH Launches DIMESTORE at the Orange County Public Library

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (March 15, 2016)–The Orange County Public Library is pleased to welcome Lee Smith, award-winning author and Hillsborough resident as she launches her newest release, Dimestore. Smith will be on hand for a book reading and signing Tuesday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library in downtown Hillsborough. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of the books will be available for purchase from the Friends of the Orange County Public Library.

Dimestore is Smith’s memoir. She writes about her father’s dimestore in her hometown (the dimestore is now gone, along with the original town); her relatives and the local characters; her mother’s long-cherished recipes and what they mean to her; the mental illness that courses through her family tree; and how her mountain culture made her a writer (http://leesmith.com/).

“We are thrilled to host Lee’s book reading and signing,” said Lucinda Munger, director of the library system. “Hillsborough was dubbed America’s Little Literary town by Wall Street Journal in 2014, and Lee Smith is one of the reasons we have that distinction.”

Other well-known authors living in Hillsborough include Annie Dillard, Jill McCorkle, Frances Mayes, Allan Gurganus, Michael Malone and John Bemis. Orange County is home to other well-known writers as well, Daniel Wallace, John Grisham and Sarah Dessen to name a few.

“As someone who believes fiercely in literacy and education, living and working in Orange County is like a dream come true,” said Munger, pointing out that most if not all of the local authors are eager to promote literacy and to help aspiring authors refine their craft. “And, yes, I will be in line with others to have my book signed that evening.”

The Orange County Public Library has three locations to serve residents. The Main Library is located at 137 W. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough. The Carrboro Branch is located inside McDougle Middle School, 900 Old Fayetteville Road in Chapel Hill. The Cybrary is located at The Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro Street, Carrboro.
