ORANGE COUNTY, NC (January 4, 2016)—Orange County will once again sponsor the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) tax preparation program.

This FREE service provides completion of federal and state tax returns with electronic filing. Individuals with low to moderate income, who cannot afford a paid preparer and/or find tax laws confusing, are encouraged to use VITA. Clients are not restricted by age or county residency, but must meet eligibility guidelines.

The VITA service is available Monday - Saturday at several sites in Orange and Chatham counties.

Beginning on Friday, January 18, either call one of the numbers below or go online for specific dates, locations, eligibility requirements, what to bring, walk in information, and appointments.

  •  Spanish-speakers: 919.245.2010 (beginning January 18), leave your name and a phone number, a bilingual volunteer will contact you to schedule an appointment) 
  • Compass Center for Women and Families: 919.968.4610 (in addition to standard returns, certain days are designated for foreign student services)

Note: Arrive 15 minutes early to complete the intake process and allow two hours for the return preparation and review.

The Orange County VITA program is provided by the Volunteer Connect 55+ division of the Department on Aging. Other sponsors include the United Way of the greater Triangle, the Compass Center, the Town of Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro and Action Pathways. All volunteers are IRS-certified.
