Sheriff’s Department

U.S. Department of Justice - Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program

Amount: $236,531 (Orange County’s Allotment: $59,940)

This grant award is a joint venture between Orange County, and the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime.  Orange County plans to use its portion to purchase video cameras and radar systems for patrol vehicles and cover overtime costs incurred by increasing the number of community policing patrol hours. 

Department of Social Services

Food and Nutrition Services

Amount: $36,571

These funds will enhance administrative support and delivery of food and nutrition services to help people in need of emergency assistance. The program will perform these services using new contracted and nonpermanent staff.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program

Amount: $ $30,824

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program will supplement and expand ongoing efforts to provide food, shelter and supportive services for Orange County citizens during the economic crisis (i.e. rent and utility payment assistance).

Health Department

NC Division of Public Health - Vaccinations

Amount: $44,228.37

The NC Division of Public Health, through the CDC, has provided funding for vaccinations, including seasonal influenza, for school-aged children.  The Health Department, in consultation with both school systems, is targeting upper elementary and middle school children in both public school systems. The Department estimates that 75% of the children in these grade levels will be voluntarily vaccinated through this special project These grades were selected as they are less likely to receive an influenza vaccination from their private provider because regular provider visits are at longer intervals for these age groups.

NC Division of Public Health - H1N1 Response

Amount: $80,000

The NC Division of Public Health, through the CDC has allocated funds allocated funds for pandemic flu preparation, specifically H1 N1 influenza response. The grant provides for a two phase process: Phase I has a required focus on planning and Phase 2 has a required focus on enhanced surveillance. The funds will support expedited revisions and expansion of the pandemic influenza (pan flu) plans and for activities that will enable the department to rapidly detect and respond to the next outbreak of H1 N1 flu virus. <learn more>


Department on Aging

NC Division of Aging and Adult and Adult Services (DAAS) - Senior Lunch Program

Amount: $17,893

The department has received funding from DAAS to support the NC Elderly Nutrition Services Program. The funds will be used to purchase meals for participants in the Senior Lunch Program, hosted each weekday at the Robert and Pearl Seymour and Central Orange Senior Centers.

 

Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation

NC Energy Office Block Grants Awarded for Energy Efficiency

Amount: $225,675

Gov. Bev Perdue announced that an additional $4.9 million in federal Recovery Act funding for energy efficiency block grants has been awarded to 58 projects in 52 local governments to help save on utility and fuel bills and create jobs. The grants mark the last distribution of money from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program in North Carolina, for a total of about $11.9 million to 104 local governments, public school systems and community colleges.

Orange County -- $225,675 to install a ground source heat pump, solar hot water system and high efficiency hand dryer at the Emergency Services facility; improve lighting, install a solar water heater and other improvements at the Triangle Sportsplex; and improve lighting, upgrade heating and air conditioning, install a solar hot water heater and other energy-saving improvements at the Piedmont Food & Agriculture Center. Total cost of the projects is $451,350.

North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)

- Twin Creeks Park Greenway – 10’ multiuse asphalt trail including bridge over Jones Creek

- Two 28’ light transit vehicles with wheelchair lift

Orange County’s Public Transportation received from Urban ARRA Project funds- $183,000 to replace two 25-ft light transit buses.  From Rural ARRA Project funds Orange County received $362,556 to replace two 22-ft lift-equipped light transit buses and three 28-ft lift-equipped light transit to replace similar vehicles that have met useful service life and preventive maintenance for a fleet of 18 vehicles.  Total ARRA projects award is $545,556.
