HEALTH LEADERSHIP
Lideres de Salud
In 2007, OCHD led a group of previously trained Promoters in a leadership program called “Líderes de Salud,” funded through the County and a grant from Strowd Roses, Inc. With the goal of providing Promoters with the knowledge and tools necessary to make more independent strides towards leadership in health, OCHD coordinated a series of 11 classes covering topics such as: Health Disparities, Values and Communication, Public Speaking, Project Planning, Local and State Advocacy, and Board Participation.

Promoters were provided with opportunities to put these skills into action through attendance at the El Foro Latino statewide conference, a visit with local legislators on Latino Legislative Day, and mini-grants provided to northern and southern Orange groups of Promoters to design, implement and evaluate their own health promotion programs.

During the Summer of 2007, the Hillsborough group implemented a successful Zumba Fitness “Train the Trainer” program to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent obesity and diabetes. With a similar goal, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro group designed a well-attended health party called “Salud es Fiesta” in which they educated family members and friends about nutrition and exercise in a fun and culturally appropriate context. Physical activity demonstrations, healthy traditional foods and recipes, and professional nutrition experts were on hand to provide motivation, information and counseling.
