Health Promoter/Ambassador Leadership Project

About

Lay Health Promoters or Health Ambassadors are volunteers who act as natural community helpers.

The Orange County Health Department has trained volunteer Health Promoters and Ambassadors since 2000 to formally and informally share critical health and safety information in their communities.

Projects are focused on the Latino immigrant population, as they face numerous challenges to accessing information and services due to language, cultural and other barriers.

Numerous groups of Promoters or "Promotoras" have been trained. They currently meet as two separate groups, one in northern Orange County and one in southern Orange County.  In addition to their informal outreach, they currently:

  • Attend quarterly continuing education classes
  • Perform formal outreach at community events
  • Continue to formally and informally help community members with health and safety issues
  • Serve as contacts to the Orange County Immigrant Emergency Communications Committee
  • Receive quarterly newsletters on current health and safety issues
