Child and Adolescent Health Services
The following clinical services are offered:
- Routine well child care (physical exams, developmental screenings, parent education)
- Sports/Camp and Kindergarten physicals. Sports/camp physicals are flat fee services. All other services are based on income.
- Sick Care for illness
- All healthcare services are by appointment.
What is a Well Child Check-up?
It is a visit to a Health Care Provider when your child is not sick. This visit includes a complete health history and a comprehensive physical exam.
At these visits, you can expect the physical exam to include the following components:
- height and weight
- age appropriate developmental screening
- vision screening
- hearing screening
- blood pressure (3 years and up)
- vital signs
- nutritional assessment
- immunizations
- laboratory procedures: urinalysis, sickle cell, tuberculin skin test, lead screening
These visits are also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your child's health.
When should my child have a Well Child Check-up?
It is recommended that you take your child to his/her primary care provider for a Well Child Check-up at the following ages:
- 2 weeks
- 2 months
- 4 months
- 6 months
- 9 or15 months
- 12 months
- 18 months
- 2 - 20 years recommended annually
Important: Remember to bring your child's immunization record with you to the appointment.
How do I know if my child needs a Well Child Check-up?
You can call your local Medicaid Health Check Coordinator (919) 245-2413 or your doctor's office to assist you in finding out if your child is due for his/her check-up.
How can I get my child to the doctor if I don't have a car?
If your child is enrolled in the Health Check Program, he/she may be eligible for free transportation. For information regarding transportation, call your local Department of Social Services, (919) 245-2800 (Hillsborough) or (919) 968-2000 (Chapel Hill), or your Health Check Coordinator.
The Health Department provides all required childhood immunizations at no cost to families.
Child Service Coordination is an interagency program available at no cost to any child birth to age 5 regardless of financial status who is medically or socially at risk for developmental delays or who has been identified with developmental concerns.
Families in Focus Intensive Home Visiting Program is an enhancement of the Child Service Coordination program that allows the highest risk families of Orange County to receive more frequent intensive home visiting services.
Postpartum/Newborn Home Visiting services are provided by Health Department nurses to Medicaid eligible women shortly after they give birth.
Child Care Health Consultant services are provided to Orange County Child Care Programs by a pediatric registered nurse with specialized training.
