2016 Holiday Schedule

As of July 1, 2013 the Orange County MSW Landfill permanently closed and thus the landfill location no longer accepts ANY Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) or other putrescible garbage.

The Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill accepts debris resulting solely from construction, remodeling, repair, or the demolition of pavement, buildings or other structures, and inert debris including brick, block, and uncontaminated soils.

The following items will continue to be accepted.

Mobile homes - Call ahead for an appointment. Remove all furniture and personal items prior to disposal (furniture is not accepted in the C&D landfill). Drain all fluids. Appliances and thermostats must be removed and can be recycled at the Orange County facility.

Corrugated Cardboard, Clean Wood Waste, Scrap Metal or Vegetative Yard Waste are regulated materials. Loads of C&D waste containing more that 1/3 cubic yard of concentrated amounts of these materials are subject to double tip fees. Loads containing 50% or more of these banned materials may pay an additional fee of $400. The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department offers reduced tip fees for these materials kept separate for recycling prior to delivery at the Orange County Landfill.

  THESE ITEMS ARE NOT PERMITTED/BANNED FROM LANDFILL DISPOSAL 
landfill trashcan  Municipal Solid Waste - No mixed garbage or putrescible wastes
from residents or non-residential entities.
 
 landfill skull Hazardous Waste - Residents, and businesses that generate small
quantities (less than 220 pounds per month) of hazardous waste
can bring it to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection. Hours
are Monday through Friday from 10:00 am- 6:00 pm and Saturday
from 8:00a.m.- 12:00 noon. Appointments needed for loads greater
than 50 pounds. Call 919-968-2788. 
 landfill recycle Aluminum Cans and Plastic Bottles - The State of North Carolina
bans aluminum cans and plastic drink bottles from landfill disposal.
Recycling opportunities are available throughout Orange County for both of these items.
 
 landfill skull Asbestos - No friable asbestos is allowed in the Orange County
Landfill. Contact BFI, Durham (919) 991-1000 or DH Griffin, Raleigh

Automotive Fluids - antifreeze, motor oil and used oil filters - These
automotive products, as well as kerosene, transmission fluid, gear oil,
diesel fuel, and heating oil (each in a separate container, no other
automotive chemicals) can be brought to Orange County Solid Waste Convenience Centers by residents.  Residents and businesses that produce
less that 220 lbs of hazarodu waste per month can also bring the to the
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

types including wet-cell, lead-acid, rechargable AND dry-cell
batteries can be recycled at all five Orange County Solid Waste Convenience Centers and at the Hazardous Waste Collection

Barrels or Drums are not permitted in the Orange County
Landfill unless both ends have been removed.
 
 landfill skull Chromated Copper Arsenic or Creosote Treated Wood--are not
permitted if received separately from the waste stream.
 
 landfill recycle Clean Wood and Pallets - Clean wood is banned from the
Orange County Landfill and must be separated to be recycled.
Pallets, scrap dimensional lumber (2x4 type), mill ends, oriented
strand board (OSB), plywood, or wood used in concrete forms with
less than 2 inch diameter residual chunks of plaster/concrete attached.
Clean wood can contain nails, bolts and screws in reasonable amounts.
No cross-ties, landscaping timbers, masonite, painted or stained wood,
telephone poles, treated wood, wood with tar or roofing materials on it
can be recycled with clean wood.
 
 landfill recycle Corrugated Cardboard - Cardboard dumpsters are available at 
24-hour recycling drop-off sites for businesses that generate 50
boxes or less per week. Those with more than fifty boxes a week
may use the Orange County Landfill or hire a private service. 
Boxes must be flattened and all packing material removed.
No pizza boxes or wax-coated boxes.
 
 landfill recycle Electronics - Televisions and Computers are banned from North
Carolina Landfills. Non-residential entities (businesses, non-profits,
faith-based organizations) can recycle "data carrying" electronics such
as computers and peripherals, televisions, radios, fax machines, printers,
and telephones.  We also accept compact discs and plastic jewel cases.
Businesses can bring items listed here to the Orange County Landfill at no
cost during normal hours of landfill operation.  Residents can recycle their
data-carrying electronics at any of the five Solid Waste Convenience Centers 
and at the Orange County Landfill. No electronic media containing tape such
as audio cassette tapes, video cassette tapes, or shrink wrap, please. 
 landfill skull Lead pipes, bulbs, lighting ballast or fixtures, thermostats and
light switches, transformers, and capacitors--are not permitted
if received separately from the waste stream. Mercury containing
items such as thermostats, fluorescent lights and ballasts can be 
brought to the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility
 landfill recycle Oyster Shells - The State of North Carolina bans oyster shells
from landfill disposal. There is a collection location at the Orange County Landfill.
 
 landfill recycle Scrap Metal- including but not limited to cast iron tubs, aluminum
gutters and siding, bedsprings, metal pipe, steel studs, tin roofing
and other items containing significant amounts of metal.
 
 landfill recycle Tires - Up to 5 tires of all sizes are allowed per visit at no charge. 
 landfill recycle Large Appliances (White Goods) - White goods (refrigerators, stoves,
water heaters, washers, dryers, etc.) are collected for recycling in a separate area.
 
 landfill recycle Vegetative (Yard) Waste - Vegetative waste is brush, grass, leaves, logs
(no larger than 12" diameter / 10' long). No plastic bags, trash, garbage,
dirt, rocks or stumps. Yard waste may be delivered in paper yard waste
bags specifically designed for this purpose available at home improvement stores.

Liquid, Radioactive, Polychlorinate Biphenyls (PCB's) or Medical Wastes are not permitted.
