Misdemeanor Diversion Program

Starting on April 15, 2016, the Criminal Justice Resource Office will coordinate a new Misdemeanor Diversion Program (MDP) for 16 and 17 year olds, who have no criminal record. Modelled on a successful pilot project in Durham County, the Orange County MDP will divert the first time arrests of 16 and 17 year olds with eligible misdemeanor offenses.

Rather than face arrest and prosecution in adult criminal court, these young individuals will be referred to the CJRO, where they will be placed on a 90-day diversion plan that will focus on addressing individual therapeutic needs or will require the completion of community service hours. Upon successful compliance, no charges will ever be filed and these young individuals will never have an arrest entered in the criminal justice system.

The Orange County MDP is being launched with the support of all Orange County criminal justice system stakeholders and law enforcement agencies.
