AlertThe Fit Feet Clinic and the Physical Function Screenings canceled tomorrow, Friday, January 19, 2018, due to inclement weather. Participants will be called to reschedule in the near future.

Health and Wellness is a division of the Department on Aging that offers an array of services, ranging from massages to free blood pressure screenings. We also offer many fitness classes like yoga, aerobics, tai chi, and much more.

SPECIAL EVENTS, CLINICS AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

Passmore Center and Seymour Center offer a variety of Wellness - Special Events. Participants must register in advance by calling the Passmore Center (919) 245-2015, or the Seymour Center (919) 968-2070.

2018 Orange County Senior Games - Registration Open

Senior Games is a year-round health promotion program for adults ages 50 +.  Activities include sports and games competitions/tournaments, social activities, and the SilverArts – including visual, heritage (wood working, basket weaving, ceramic glass and etc), as well as local and state competitions. For more information call Dana Hughes, Senior Games Coordinator, 919-918-7372. The Recreation and Parks Departments of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and the Orange County Department on Aging are the local sponsors. 

The 2018 Orange County Senior Games’ Athletic Events will be held Apr 7–May 12.  The SilverArts visual/heritage art show will go on display beginning Mon, Apr 9 – 26 at the Seymour Center. For the Senior Games’ on-going activities/events schedule, please refer to the Athletics section of the Senior Times.

 Registration Information:

Registration forms are available on line at: http://ncseniorgames.org/local.htm. Registration forms will be mailed to last year’s participants.  New participants may pick up a registration application from the following locations: Passmore and Seymour Centers, recreation departments, and at the locations of each event in Orange County.  You can also call a local senior center or recreation department and ask to have one mailed to you.  Be sure to check the application for the “early bird” savings.  The early bird deadline is Fri, Mar 9 and the final deadline is Fri, Mar 23 (the SilverArts registration deadlines are the same as for Athletic events).  For more information and/or to volunteer at any of the events, please call Dana Hughes, 919-918-7372.  For information about SilverArts, including the cheerleaders call Cydnee Sims at 919-245-4250.

Orange County Senior Games are coordinated by Orange County Department on Aging and the Recreation and Parks Departments of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. They are part of the National Senior Games, a year-round health promotion program for adults ages 55+.  Each spring, thousands of North Carolinians compete at local events.  Winners of local events move on to compete at the state-level and those winners then go on to compete nationally. Clinic’s Purpose:

FREE multi-disciplinary assessments for Orange County residents 60+. Includes falls, strength and balance, memory function, mood and medication review. Individualized recommendations and referrals are made to additional services as needed. Stay active, stay fit, stay safe in your home.

When:

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
2nd Thursday of every month (alternating centers)

Assessments, Recommendation, Referrals, and Resources for:

  • Mood and Memory
  • Mobility and Fitness
  • Prescribed and over-the-counter medicine use
  • Home Safety
  • Falls Prevention
  • Nutrition and diet

CHAPEL HILL SENIOR STRIDERS

Senior Striders is an indoor walking program at the University Mall in Chapel Hill for older adults, ages 55+.

University Mall is open for walkers every Monday – Friday at 7:30 am. Walking can be done on an individual basis or in groups.

On the 3rd Tuesday of every month we meet to walk as a group, eat breakfast, and enjoy an informational lecture on various health topics.

8:00 am: Warm-Up Exercises at the Mall Center Court

8:20 am: Breakfast served in The Weathervane at Southern Season

8:45 am: Educational Session. Check the Senior Times for upcoming lectures.
