Health and Wellness is a division of the Department on Aging that offers an array of services, ranging from massages to free blood pressure screenings. We also offer many fitness classes like yoga, aerobics, tai chi, and much more.

Orange County Senior Games are coordinated by Orange County Department on Aging and the Recreation and Parks Departments of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. They are part of the National Senior Games, a year-round health promotion program for adults ages 55+.  Each spring, thousands of North Carolinians compete at local events.  Winners of local events move on to compete at the state-level and those winners then go on to compete nationally. National Senior Health and Fitness Day Celebration: Every year, on the last Wednesday in May, the Department on Aging hosts activities in honor of National Senior Health and Fitness Day. Check out the summer edition of the Senior Times for more information.

Brain Health Academy: Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle

Brain Health Academy, is a six-week educational program on achieving a healthy lifestyle and overall brain health. 

The Academy will take place at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday beginning March 22, 2017 and culminating in a graduation ceremony on April 26, 2017.  Experts will share practical information and up-to-date research at each session. 

The program is free. However, space is limited and participants must register by Wednesday, March 15.

Curriculum Details and Schedule:

Wed, Mar 22: Kick–off Event – Dr. Dan Kaufer, MD | Chief, Cognitive & Behavioral Neurology Director, UNC Memory Disorders Program

Wed, Mar 29: Module I - Nutrition for a Healthy Brain & Body: Eating for brain health – what is good for the body is good for the brain. As we age, whether in our 40’s or 80’s, our brains and body require certain nutrients to function optimal.

Wed, Apr 5: Module II - Exercise Your Best Brain: Importance of physical activity (cardio and strength training) for optimal brain health – the why and the how.

Wed, Apr 12: Module III - Managing Life’s Transitions – Stress Reduction Systems: The importance of adopting a stress management system to support inevitable life transitions.

Wed, Apr 19: Module IV – Part A: Social Engagement / Volunteerism / Sense of Purpose / Meaning: People live longer and happier lives when they are engaged in and connected to something that gives them meaning and purpose, such as regular volunteering.

Part B: Maximizing Cognition with Novel Learning: How music, dance and other novel learning affects the health of the brain.

Wed, Apr 26: Please note due to the closure of the series tonight it will last until 9 pm.
Module V – Part A: Healthy Hearing Stimulates the Brain through Language Communications: Types of hearing complications.  What assistive devices and techniques are available and how hearing connects to the brain.

Part B: Medication Management: How Medication Management affects the Brain

Light dinner refreshments will be served.

Clinic’s Purpose:

Free multi-disciplinary assessments for Orange County residents 60+. Includes falls, strength and balance, memory function, mood and medication review. Individualized recommendations and referrals are made to additional services as needed. Stay active, stay fit, stay safe in your home.

  • Prescribed and over-the-counter medicine use
  • Home Safety
  • Falls Prevention

CHAPEL HILL SENIOR STRIDERS

Senior Striders is an indoor walking program at the University Mall in Chapel Hill for older adults, ages 55+.

University Mall is open for walkers every Monday – Friday at 7:30 am. Walking can be done on an individual basis or in groups.

On the 3rd Tuesday of every month we meet to walk as a group, eat breakfast, and enjoy an informational lecture on various health topics.

8:00 am: Warm-Up Exercises at the Mall Center Court

8:20 am: Breakfast served in The Weathervane at Southern Season

8:45 am: Educational Session. Check the Senior Times for upcoming lectures.
