Do you have questions about Medicare plans or long-term care insurance?
Would you like assistance sorting your Medicare or health insurance bills?
Trained SHIIP volunteers help fellow senior citizens in their community with questions regarding Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare claims processing, Medicare Advantage, Medicare prescription drug plans and long-term care insurance. Volunteers have been trained by the NC Department of Insurance to provide this free service.

Extra Help Program (Low-Income Subsidy)
Do you know someone who is on Medicare and needs assistance in paying for prescription drugs?
Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low-income subsidy program if he/she has limited income and resources.
The Extra Help program can increase cost savings by

Paying all or part of the monthly premiums

Paying annual deductibles
-
Providing lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan
To qualify for Extra Help

The annual income must be limited to $15,600 for an individual ($21,000 for a married couple living together).

The total resources must be limited to $12,510 for an individual ($25,010 for a married couple living together). The resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle.

How to become a SHIIP Volunteer
Requirements

Not be, or have, an immediate family member who is an active insurance salesperson.

Complete a SHIIP Volunteer Counseling Report Form and a Client Agreement Form for each client. These should be submitted to the SHIIP coordinator or volunteer coordinator for each county.

Keep all client information (medical and financial) confidential.

Never recommend a specific insurance company or policy.
Assignment Days & Hours
Be on call to provide one-to-one counseling by appointment (1) at a counseling site (2) at a home-bound client's residentc or (3) by telephone.
Training Requirements
Complete the basic SHIIP training (approx 24 hrs, Mon-Fri TBA) and participate in quarterly follow-up meetings (2 hours every three months).
