We all want our deaths to have an impact, to present a legacy for those we leave behind. What if your death could be a gift to the planet? Join us as we present the story of Clark Wang and his path through planning a spiritually significant funeral, while attempting to save a North Carolina woods from being cut down. A Will for the Woods documents Wang’s journey and process to achieve green burial at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest, NC. 

Learn more about this alternative burial option during a Q&A session immediately following the screening with Pine Forest Memorial Gardens' staff, Jenny Bingham and Pine Forest.

Archery Fun Day

Join us for a fun day learning about archery. As a kick off to possibly developing an Archery Program at the Orange County Department on Aging, we’ve teamed up with Wolf Ridge Archery Club to welcome those who think they may be interested in archery.
 
If interested, please visit Wolf Ridge Archery (WRA) online at www.wolfridgearchery.org, to learn more about their program and to complete the paperwork. Join WRA’s archery club for $30 per season. There is no charge for the Archery Fun Day event.

The W(Heel) To Hill – Cycling Event!

Orange County Senior Games (OCSG) will host a 12. 5 mi. /25 mi./50 mi. bicycle ride between the two Orange County Department on Aging Senior Centers: The Seymour Center in Chapel Hill and the Passmore Center in Hillsborough (and back), to raise awareness and funds for the year round Senior Games program. 
 
This is not a race. The event will begin and end at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill at 1 pm.  Check in will be 12 noon – 1 pm.
 
Registration Forms are available at the Passmore Center, Seymour Center, Carrboro & Chapel Hill Recreation & Parks Departments, Orange County Parks & Recreation and many other locations throughout Orange County.

You need good computer security software and a backup method in place for your computer files, email and settings. Staying Safe on the Move

No matter what mode of transportation you use, be it driving, public transportation, walking or riding a bike, you should be safe while doing it.

In recognition of National Falls Prevention Week, September 23 –29, the Department on Aging is offering an afternoon of FREE screenings and consultations to help you prevent and reduce falls and accidents.

  • CarFit – Check how well your personal vehicle "fits" you (bring your personal vehicle)
  • Footwear Examinations
  • Walker & Cane Fitting Adjustments
  • Consultations (by appointment)

 SENIOR LUNCH PROGRAM 


The Senior Lunch Program offers hot, nutritious meals at the Orange County Senior Centers each Monday through Friday at noon. Meals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Orange County residents 60 years and older are invited to participate. For people under age 60, a meal costs $6. Voluntary and confidential donations for lunch are a very important part of the Program's budget which includes funding from the Older Americans Act, Orange County Government, and the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough.

Tax Assistance

VOLUNTEER WITH VITA

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is sponsored by the IRS and provides free tax assistance for eligible low and moderate income taxpayers of any age.  We have over 70 volunteers and complete over 1,500 tax returns from February-April each year. 

Tax help is provided at both the Seymour Center and the Passmore Center.  Volunteers assist in a variety of roles including office assistance, receptionist, computer support as well as tax preparers. Orientation Sessions for new volunteers will start in October.
