Assistive Listening Devices Available at the Senior Centers

Did you know that both the Passmore and Seymour Centers have assistive listening devices available when you attend programs at the Centers?  Both the Great Hall at Passmore and the Theater at the Seymour Center have a system for enhancing the speakers’/performers’ voices.  Each center has 10 assistive listening receivers and 2 assistive devices that work with a t-coil. We also have the capacity to amplify a classroom instructor or program provider in one of the class rooms other than the theater. (We have a limited number of these systems so ask about availability.)

If you are in need of such a device while you are at the center for a program, speak to the front desk person who can instruct you on how to use the system.

Looking to Share Your Home?  Looking for Housemates?

The Seymour Center and the Passmore Center each have a Shared Housing Bulletin Board to help those seeking shared housing. Please post a notecard sized notice on the bulletin board with your contact information and what you are seeking. The path to a new living situation starts now!

Orange County Voter Forums – Voter ID Laws

Do you have questions about the voter ID law? We can help! The Policy and Advocacy Senior Resource Team is proud to host two public forums – Mon, July 15 and Thu, August 8 – for people to learn more about the law as it stands, how it may impact our community, how to get a valid photo ID, and how to volunteer!

The Orange County Board of Elections, You Can Vote, and Spread the Vote will all have representatives present to talk about the law and getting involved. The first hour will be used for presentation and the second hour will be used for Q&A and time to meet with representatives.

International Conflicts and Approaches: Asia and the Middle East

While the world's attention has recently been focused on trade wars, conflicts in the Middle East, Brexit, and the nuclear nonproliferation issues, the plight and predicament of minorities in many parts of the world go unnoticed and unattended.

Although festering for a long time, the political and humanitarian situations of the Uyghurs in China and the Rohingyas in Myanmar have of late become cruel and indefensible crises of varying degrees. This discussion will attempt to highlight the main points of these conflicts and what may be some nonviolent international responses to resolve them.

Medicare Quick Tip of the Month

Are you paying more than $8.50/month for your prescription medication?  Medicare’s Extra Help Program reduces the cost of medications and drug plan premiums for those who qualify.  If you have monthly income under $1,538 ($2,078 for a married couple living together) and limited resources, you may qualify.   Those with lower incomes may qualify for additional programs that eliminate the Part B premium, deductibles and coinsurance.  Make an appointment with a certified SHIIP Counselor to see if you qualify and complete an application.  Visit us online at or call 919-245-4274.

Medicare Assistance

SHIIP provides free, unbiased education and assistance with Medicare. We can help you understand when and how to enroll, how to choose between the different Medicare options, and how to read your Medicare statements. Appointments with Certified Medicare Counselors are available at the Passmore Center and the Seymour Center. Schedule your appointment online, or call us at 919-245-4274.
