Who can get a booster shot?

Who is Eligible for a Booster Shot?

To strengthen and extend protections against COVID-19, boosters are now available for all ages 12 and older. If you are eligible, you should get your booster now.

You should get a booster if:
  • You are 12 or older, and
  • You received your second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least FIVE months ago, or
  • You received your Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least TWO months ago.
The CDC also recommends a third dose of Pfizer for children 5 to 11 who have compromised immune systems.

Children and teens ages 12 and up can only receive the Pfizer booster, and parental consent is required. Adults 18 or older can get any brand.

Get a booster anywhere COVID-19 vaccines are available. Booster doses are free for everyone. No insurance or doctor's note is needed.

Adults 18 and older may receive any brand of COVID-19 vaccine for your booster shot. However, it is recommended that people get boosted with a mRNA vaccine – Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech, instead of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, unless they have a medical reason as to why they cannot receive an mRNA vaccine. Speak with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you have questions about what booster is right for you.

FAQ

What Does it Mean When a Disease is Endemic?

A disease is endemic when its presence becomes steady in a particular region, or at least predictable, like seasonal influenza.

The endemic level of a disease doesn’t necessarily mean the preferred level either, but just that it is predictable. Here in the U.S., RSV, the seasonal flu, and the common cold circulate in a “predictable” pattern, meaning they are endemic.

SARS-CoV2, the virus causing the pandemic, is constantly changing. As of 2022, COVID-19 is still considered a pandemic. However, many experts predict that the virus will eventually become an endemic disease. The timeline to endemicity depends on several factors, such as immune protection from vaccinations and natural infection, and how the disease continues to spread or mutate in the future.
