BeSMART for Gun Safety

Did you know:
  • 5.4 million American children live in homes with guns that are both loaded and unlocked?
  • Each year in the United States, nearly 350 children ages 17 and under gain access to a firearm and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else.
  • Every year, nearly 700 children, 17 and under, die by suicide with a gun.
COVID 19 has left many youth anxious, socially isolated, and bored.  Adults should assume curious youth and teens can find guns.

Store firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition.  Ask about gun safety when sending your children to play or visit with friends and relatives.

Visit BeSMARTforKids.org for tips on responsible gun ownership and how to talk with other adults about safe gun storage.

Need a free gun lock for yourself, relative or client?  Contact Donna King at 245-2449 or dking@orangecountync.gov.
