Press Release: State Urges Employers to Adopt Vaccine Verification, Issues New Guidance
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. July 30, 2021 - With COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations accelerating at an alarming rate, North Carolina will begin requiring vaccine verification for state employees and urges other government agencies and private employers to do the same.
The changes announced Thursday, July 29, come as the highly contagious and potentially dangerous Delta variant has spread across the state mostly in the unvaccinated. The changes include additional guidance for unvaccinated people and align with new guidance on masks from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Until more people get the vaccine, we will continue living with the very real threat of serious disease, and we will continue to see more dangerous and contagious variants like Delta,” Gov. Roy Cooper said. He and Secretary Mandy Cohen of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services urged pushing unvaccinated family and friends to get their shots.
Updated Guidance
Updated guidance from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reminds unvaccinated people:- Continue practicing the three Ws - wear a mask in all indoor public settings, wait 6 feet apart in all public settings, and wash hands often.
- Do not gather with other unvaccinated people who do not live with you or stay outside and keep 6 feet of distance.
- Do not travel.

Get Back on Track with Routine Immunizations As your children head back to school this fall, it’s particularly important for you to work with your child’s doctor or nurse to make sure they get caught up on missed well-child visits and recommended vaccines.
Remember to take care of yourself too! Make sure to receive any vaccines you need to stay healthy. Use CDC’s adult vaccine assessment tool to see which vaccines might be right for you.

Free COVID-19 Testing When To Test
• If you have symptoms of COVID-19, even if you are vaccinated or had COVID-19. • If you have had close contact with someone with COVID-19, get tested 3-5 days after exposure, even if you don't have symptoms. • If you have are not vaccinated and may have been exposed to COVID-19, such as through travel, attending large gatherings, or being in crowded or poorly-ventilated indoor settings. • If the Health Department recommends that you get a test.
You can take this CDC quiz to find out if you should take a test.
If you test positive, isolate for 10 days. Notify people you were in close contact with that they need to quarantine.
If you test negative, you probably were not infected at the time your sample was collected. The test result only means that you did not have COVID-19 at the time of testing. Continue to take steps to protect yourself and others. Hillsborough Weekday COVID-19 Testing

Celebrating World Breastfeeding WeekBreastfeeding is a journey. There are ups and downs, and feelings of accomplishment and frustration. We know that breastfeeding has benefits for both moms and their infants and children, but new families need the help of their partners, families, workplaces, and communities to meet their breastfeeding goals.
This week is World Breastfeeding Week, and the theme is Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility. Here are some ways that you can protect breastfeeding for the families in your life:- Limit the number of visitors in the first weeks of the baby’s life. Some mothers may feel overwhelmed with entertaining visitors while trying to breastfeed 8-12 times per day.
- If you are visiting the new family, plan to help with household chores such as food preparation, garbage/diaper disposal, cleaning and caring for older children. Mom and baby need this time to get to know each other and if they are breastfeeding, it is important to have as much practice as possible.
- Support mom’s goals with breastfeeding and help her get support if she is having troubles.
- Make sure mom is comfortable while breastfeeding and has had plenty to eat and drink. Provide a tray of snacks and water that she can reach easily.
- Talk, sing, and hum to the new baby in a soft, calm voice. Use eye contact.
It takes a village to raise a child, and that includes supporting breastfeeding moms. For more information about breastfeeding, visit NewMomHealth.com and ReadySetBabyOnline.com.
You can also read about why the COVID-19 vaccination is recommended during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, also available in Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Arabic.
