On Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen voted 7-0 to move forward with "The Commons" schematic presented by Perkins + Will, architects for the building at 203 S. Greensboro Street. This building will house the Orange County Southern Branch Library, Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department, WCOM and The ArtsCenter. To see the presentation visit the Town of Carrboro website.
When the Board of Aldermen asked about having the library on the second floor of the building, Lucinda Munger, library director stated, "Even if someone is headed to the facility to' just' to use the library, they get to see what else is going on in the building. It's a great opportunity for all of us."
Now that the Board of Aldermen have selected the concept they want to move forward with, the architects will address in more detail what the exterior and interior of the building will look like. In the meantime, the Board of Aldermen will hear more about how to address parking for the downtown area and the project.
Next steps in the process
- Library director, Lucinda Munger will present information to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Tues, Oct. 16.
- The Town of Carrboro is getting preliminary price estimates for the work.
- After meeting individually with The ArtsCenter, WCOM, Town of Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department, as well as the library, Perkins + Will will work on the next phase of plans for the building.
